Watermelon Seed Story Example

Yesterday we really had the chance to practice our "seed story" concept. Here are two great pictures from a student in our class.

To the right is her big watermelon idea, Schlitterbahn. Inside her big idea are 3 tiny seed ideas.
- water slide
- lazy river
- wave pool

This student decided to write about the lazy river and tubing down it with her grandma. I was so proud of how they stayed focused on the tiny seed idea! Great job.

Watermelon Seed Stories

Our young writers have a tendency to write long, drawn out stories. We are now learning that they need to zoom into one "tiny" part of their day. We relate this idea by using a watermelon analogy. Our whole day = watermelon . . . Swinging at recess = is a watermelon seed. This concept will take a lot of practice and repitition. We encourage students to think of the things they experience as seeds so if you are with your child when something happy, sad, exciting etc. happens to them you might want to mention that this is a "seed" idea!
